We welcome all the students around the world to participate in the Student Design Competitions (SDC) held at the upcoming 2015 International Microwave Symposium (IMS2015). The SDCs are indeed one of the most energetic parts of the IMS. The IMS2015 in Phoenix will continue the legendary tradition of enthusiasm with a very strong SDC program. IMS2015 will host a total of sixteen design competitions. Since its inception with the Power Amplifier Design Competition in year 2005, this program of the IMS has come a long way. In terms of the numbers, following figure shows the trend of the number of competitions held at the IMS since year 2005.

This year, the sixteen SDCs span over nineteen technical areas. The design competitions are coordinated by the Technical Committees (TCs) of the IEEE Microwave Theory and Techniques Society, and many of the TCs are sponsoring competitions this year.


All student design competitions will take place on Tuesday, May 19, 2015, with the competition winners recognized at the Student Awards Luncheon on Thursday, May 21, 2015. Student competitors should be aware that the IMS will not assist participants in getting necessary equipment or designed circuits/systems into the United States.
The deadline for submitting your application to the competition coordinators is extended to Tuesday, March 31, 2015

The winners will be announced at the Student Awards Luncheon at the Sheraton Hotel on Thursday, 21 May 2015 in Valley of the Sun Room.

 

General Rules of Competition

  1. To enter a competition, the student or students must have been full-time (enrolled for a minimum of nine hours per term as graduate students or twelve hours per term as undergraduates) during the time the work was performed. Please refer to individual competition rules for additional information regarding undergraduate vs graduate team distinctions.
  2. The students must submit a signed statement from their academic advisor that the work is principally the effort of the students.
  3. The students must submit entry materials by March 31, 2015. The "additional details" link for the competition of interest lists the required information to be submitted along with the entry form.
  4. At least one student member from the team must register for and attend the conference to present their designs for evaluation at IMS2015.
  5. The students should use the email address issued by their respective institutions for all communication regarding the competitions, rather than their personal emails (e.g., Gmail, Hotmail).
  6. Students submitting their designs from the past competition(s), or incremental/improved design from the past year participants should explicitly make a note of such a prior work to the coordinator(s) of the competition. It is up to the discretion of the coordinator(s) and the judges to evaluate such designs.
  7. Students may enter as individuals or as a team. There may be no more than four students on a team.
